I have a Coleman (now called 'PowerMate', I think) Vertex 7500 Generator.
Model: pm0557523.9
Engine: Briggs and Stratton
Model 28N777
Type 1194-E1
This thing sat in a shed for a few years.
When I got it the shaft was stuck.
I freed it up without too much trouble.
Cleaned up the flywheel teeth on the engine and starter sides.
Problem:
The starter doesnt seem to have the oomph it should.
It cranks, and turns the shaft until it hits the compression stroke.
At that point it binds up - just doesnt have the muscle to get over the compression.
I took the starter off and put it on 12v.
It spins freely.
Disasembled it, inspected the rotor, commutator and brushes - all look to be in good shape.
It's not a weak battery - I tried this with a 55a charger/starter, and hooked to jumper cables to the truck.
Do starters get 'weak' without being actually broken?
Or could the compression somehow have increased (I dont know how that would work...)
It doesnt seem bound up - I can grab the flywheel with my hands and move it over the compression hump.
I can get a starter for about $50.
But I'd rather not start replacing parts with prices like that without some confidence that it's actually bad.
Any thoughts appreciated.
